Woven Into The Community

ADES 2520.501 Graphic Design - Karen Dorff - Spring 2020

Pacific Fabrics is a craft and fabric store with a long and rich history in Seattle, Washington. Established in 1917, they have been supplying the community with materials for over a century, and they are still loved by their customers to this day.

For this project, I was tasked with redesigning the Pacific Fabrics branding with both a logo and custom letterhead.

It was important to me to keep Pacific Fabric’s ties to their location and community as a vital part of their identity, as they make clear through their products and social media that they have a lot of pride in their city. To do this, I decided to try to merge their connection to the coast with their offerings as a business. Through researching and creating thumbnails, I was also inspired by traditional American tattoo styles, as these were common with sailors, and featured strong artistic stylings.

I moved forward with the lighthouse design that tied the concept of the sea, a spool of thread, and traditional American tattoo rendering styles before creating a lockup with a slab serif typeface to keep the logo rooted in industrial stylings while making sure it was still sophisticated in look.
